QUARTERS, RENT AND RENT ALLOWANCES.

117.
(1) Application and interpretation.
This
Order applies only to officers on sterling salaries, and
in it, unless the contrary appears
(a) "officer means a male officer personally resident in the Colony, and does not include a dependent;
and leave, whether spent in the Colony or not, shall count as residence only if it is short leave not exceeding 42
days, or sick leave.
(b) "dependents" means dependents in the Colony,
namely the wife, sons under 18 years of age and unmarried
daughters, or any of them, of a married officer, who reside
with him, or whom he is liable to maintain; and a dependent
shall be deemed to be in the Colony unless he absents
himself therefrom for two months or more at a time;
(c) "salary" means the annual value, in sterling,
of an officer's pay for the time being (including acting pay, but no allowances) or the equivalent of such salary
in dollars at the Treasury rate;
(d) "tenement" means a dwelling-house or self-
contained flat;
(e) "quarters" means a tenement owned or rented
by the Government;
(f) "rent" means monthly rent or, in relation to
a tenement owned and occupied by an officer, a sum fixed
by the Assessor; and rent includes rates paid by an officer;
(g) "rent for quarters means the rent payable
by any officer in accordance with paragraph (5);
(h) "rent allowance" means the allowance payable
to any officer in accordance with paragraph (6).
